Don’t let the size fool you, these are athletes. Sumo wrestling is known as a demanding contact competition in which a wrestler tries to push the other wrestler outside of the round shaped ring or maybe to contact the actual ground outside the ring with any part of his body except the bottoms of the foot.

The original sport started in Japan, where it is still the only nation in which it is known as a professional sport. It is currently thought of as a a modern day Japanese style of martial art. However this perception is definitely wrong because Sumo carries an historical past spanning 100′s of years! A lot of the  old practices have most certainly been safeguarded in sumo. The activity consists of quite a few ritual components, like the usage of salt to purify the ring, coming from the times when Sumo was developed within the Shinto faith

The lifestyle of being a rikishi is extremely disciplined, together with the principles set down from the Sumo Association. The majority of sumo wrestlers must reside in communal “sumo training stables” referred to in Japan as heya in which every part associated with their everyday lives from food to their particular type of dress are determined by rigid customs.

Many television shows have featured Sumo wrestler in comic skids. We in the West find the enormous size of the wrestlers not to mention their belts know as a mawashi that they wear in the ring, often referred to as a diaper, hilarious to behold. Thank goodness that while the big men are extremely serious about their sport, they have a sense of humor. In Japan, Sumo wrestlers are rock stars, so what do we know!

One of the main questions people want to know, especially Westerners, is how do sumo wrestlers gain all that weight. Here are a few methods, follow them and you too will pile on the weight:

1. Do not eat breakfast. This makes your body’s metabolism slow down not speed up.
2. Work out before you eat. Believe it or not instead of using up stored fat your body will slow itself down to hang onto the fat it already has.
3. After you eat a meal, go lay down and sleep. This is one of the sumo wrestlers main weapons, sleeping for at least 4 hours after a meal.
4. We are taught to have our biggest meals early in the day, picture a upside down pyramid. The sumo wrestler diet does the opposite by eating later in the day so that the fat is not used but stored instead.
5. Communal eating is practiced. By eating with others we tend to be distracted by the conversation and therefore eat even more food.

The American Heart Association has some great healthy eating tips which will help you live long and healthy.

Sumo is also an novice sport, they have amateurs  in lower level schools, high school, and also on college levels in Japan. There are school and college competitions, you will also find that there are open novice tournaments. Sumo at this level doesn’t have all of the formal ceremony. The most outstanding novice sumo wrestlers in Japan are generally college champions who later are able to enter expert sumo at the makushita level as the third division is called, instead of from the lowest entry level. On the West Coast of the United States the California Sumo Federation is really helping promote Sumo as an amateur sport.
